Build a Cedar Square Planter

One of our most popular classes in our cedar woodworking series, build a beautiful planter for your porch or backyard. In this hands-on class, you’ll learn how to build your own custom square planter—perfect for larger plants/shrubs or for larger arrangements. Whether you're new to power tools or already comfortable with a saw, this workshop will guide you step by step through design, measuring, cutting, and assembling. We’ll cover tool safety, basic joinery, and how to choose the right materials for outdoor use. You’ll leave not only with a finished square planter, but also the skills and confidence to take on more woodworking projects at home. Tools you’ll learn to use: • Measuring tape • Miter saw • Table saw • Drill/Driver • Finish nailer All tools and materials will be provided. We use locally sourced cedar for all of our outdoor planters - which will last for years to come! No experience necessary—just bring your curiosity and a love for growing things! Join us for this class before it sells out, as we say goodbye to planters until 2026! The cost of this class is flexible. West Philly Tool Library is committed to keeping our classes affordable and accessible to as many people as possible. Please consider that the cost of the cedar alone is around $100 with the balance going towards other materials (screws, fabric, etc.) and compensating the instructor. Per our policy, for cancellation requests received at least one week before the class, we will issue a credit towards a future class. We are unable to guarantee credit for cancellation requests received less than seven days before the date of the class, although we will do our best to accommodate late cancellations if we are able to fill your spot. Tickets are transferable; please notify us using this form prior to the class if someone else will be attending in your stead and provide the attendees name and email address.
